What to wear and how to behave: a relaxed guide to etiquette

Clothes

Light, covering the shoulders and knees is comfortable and respectful; a scarf for women only inside working mosques. Summer is hot (+40°C in July) — linen and a hat; spring and autumn evenings are cool.

At the table and in homes

Bread is sacred: never place it upside down or throw it away. Shoes come off indoors. Accept tea with the right hand; a refill means you are welcome to stay.

Photos

Ask before photographing people; most will say yes with a smile. Military and border sites — no.
